Tiessen has entered a plea of self-defence, claiming Lockwood threatened him with an axe during a dispute involving a puppy. Crown prosecutor Bryan Pankoff argues the force used was not justified. During the proceedings, Lockwood’s girlfriend, Keara Roberts, testified that a verbal argument preceded the shooting and noted that Lockwood died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

In his testimony, Tiessen explained that he sought roommates via Facebook to monitor his property following an SPCA complaint. He stated that Lockwood and Roberts moved in on March 20, 2023, but described the arrangement as a mistake due to noise and rent collection issues. While Tiessen acknowledged awareness of police presence at the residence prior to the incident, he testified he was initially unaware of any drug use by his roommates.

Audio recordings from the night of the incident captured Tiessen telling 911 operators to “get out of my home” while Roberts could be heard crying in the background. Tiessen also testified to a history of “repeated domestic disturbances” between Lockwood and Roberts at the residence.
