Search operations for Romanian nationals in Greece
Overview
On September 15, a speedboat capsized in the Ionian Sea approximately 12 nautical miles southeast of Kefalonia, Greece. The incident involved a 45-year-old Romanian man and a 26-year-old passenger. While the 26-year-old was rescued and transported to the General Hospital of Kefalonia, the 45-year-old man was later found deceased at Aragia Beach in Poros.
In a separate incident, a 16-day search for Silvia Lungu, a 64-year-old Romanian tourist missing on the island of Zakynthos since September 11 or 12, has ended with the discovery of her body. Lungu was last seen on security footage in the center of Alykanas. Her personal belongings, including her phone and documents, were left in her hotel room after she failed to appear for organized excursions.
On September 27, a local resident performing agricultural work discovered Lungu’s body in an olive grove in the Kastelia area of Ano Gerakari. The body was found in a state of decomposition, approximately three kilometers from where she was last seen.
The extensive search operation had previously involved the Alykanas Police Department, the Zakynthos Fire Service, the Coast Guard, Civil Protection using thermal drones, and the 6th EMAK unit from Patras utilizing a trained search dog. While authorities have stated that criminal activity has been ruled out at this stage, the body will be transported to Patras for a forensic autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Lungu was a retired senior nephrologist from Iași, Romania, and was one of the founding doctors of the dialysis department at the ‘Dr. C. I. Parhon’ Clinical Hospital in Iași. She had retired four years prior due to medical issues.
