Seasonal snowfall in the Alps

Overview

The Alps have experienced the arrival of the season’s first snowfall across several European regions. Initial reports from late October indicated snow in Bavaria, Germany, and parts of Austria, such as Vorarlberg, with snow lines initially expected to remain at higher elevations due to warm ground temperatures.

By October 24, snowfall expanded across the French, Swiss, and Italian Alps. In the French Northern Alps, accumulations reached up to 25 cm above 2,500 meters, while Switzerland reported up to 15 cm in regions like Chablais and Trient. In Austria, snow lines dropped to approximately 1,200 meters. Forecasts indicated a subsequent weather system would bring warmer air, potentially raising the snow line to 2,400–2,500 meters in France and bringing rain to parts of Switzerland above 2,000 meters.
