Security and crime trends in Ondo State
Overview
Security operations in Ondo State, led by the Amotekun Corps in collaboration with the Nigeria Police and Department of State Services, have targeted rising crime rates including kidnapping and armed robbery. In August, a rescue operation in the Okeigbo area resulted in the death of one female victim held for a N100 million ransom. Following this, security agencies paraded 15 suspects involved in various crimes such as cattle rustling and illegal firearm possession.
By September, the scope of security efforts expanded to address an influx of undocumented foreign nationals. The Amotekun Corps arrested 53 suspects in Owo, including 21 individuals from neighboring West African countries who lacked proper ECOWAS documentation. Authorities noted these individuals were moving through forests and cities under various guises. During this period, security forces also uncovered a self-kidnapping scam involving suspects using social media to stage fake abductions and successfully rescued two boys being held within the Fulani community.
