Security and hate crime trends in Germany
Overview
In July 2026, Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution reported that 28,645 individuals are classified as belonging to the Islamist environment, with approximately 9,110 deemed prone to violence. Police also identified over 400 individuals as “Gefährder,” signifying a risk of serious violent offenses.
By August 2026, data released in response to a parliamentary inquiry revealed a rise in Islamophobic crimes during the first half of the year. Between January and June, 231 crimes targeting Islam or Muslims were recorded, 194 of which were classified as politically motivated crimes originating from the right-wing spectrum. These incidents included 89 cases of incitement to hatred, 16 acts of bodily harm, 13 instances of property damage, and several cases of coercion, threats, or the use of unconstitutional symbols. While 127 suspects were identified, no arrests had been made at the time of the report.
