Overview

In late August 2026, the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdurosheed Akanbi, called for presidential amnesty for Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, suggesting his release could aid national reconciliation. During this same period, Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, known as Sunday Igboho, launched the Ogun State chapter of the Iru Ekun Security Network.

By early September, Igboho expanded the scope of the Iru Ekun Security Network, officially launching it in Akure, Ondo State, to combat banditry, kidnapping, and rogue herders across Southwest Nigeria. Igboho stated the network aims to secure forests, highways, and farming communities, noting that the initiative receives tactical support from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Department of State Services (DSS). He reported that the network has already contributed to a visible reduction in criminal activities in rural areas.
