Security incidents at Brazil Supreme Federal Court

Overview

A series of security incidents occurred at the Supreme Federal Court (STF) in Brasília in early October 2026.

On October 1, a 28-year-old man was detained after attempting to scale security fences and throwing a backpack near a bus stop. The event triggered ‘Operação Petardo’, a security protocol for suspected explosives, which led to the isolation of parts of the Esplanada dos Ministérios. A bomb squad inspected the bag and confirmed it contained only personal items, such as a toothbrush and toothpaste, rather than explosives.

One week later, on October 8, another individual was removed from the court premises. This man, who claimed to be the ‘emperor of the Brazilian Armed Forces’, was escorted to an external area after shouting incoherent phrases at the court’s marquee. Unlike the previous incident, the Judicial Police reported no weapons or direct threats, and the individual was not arrested.
