Security incidents near Mexican schools

Overview

Security incidents involving potential weapons or violence near educational institutions have been reported across several Mexican states. Initial reports focused on localized safety concerns, such as a preventive evacuation at a school in Pachuca, Hidalgo, due to a potentially armed student, and the discovery of a 9mm cartridge by a student in Zapopan, Jalisco. Subsequent incidents escalated in severity, involving armed confrontations near schools in Tecate, Baja California, and Escuinapa, Sinaloa. In Tecate, teachers instructed students to take cover during a shootout between vehicles, which resulted in the death of an individual allegedly linked to the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación. In Escuinapa, gunfire near a primary school prompted staff to secure students inside the building following a fatal shooting nearby. Authorities in these later incidents attributed the violence to territorial disputes between criminal organizations. In response to reports of 143 incidents involving firearms in educational institutions, Senator Alfonso Cepeda Salas has proposed a formal agreement to strengthen security and prevention protocols. The proposal seeks coordination between federal agencies, including the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) and the Secretariat of Security and Protection (SSPC), alongside state authorities. The initiative emphasizes training for educators and parents, psychological support, and confidential reporting mechanisms. The urgency of these measures was underscored by a recent attack in Coahuila involving explosives and machetes that resulted in a death. To mitigate risks, authorities are discussing the implementation of surveillance cameras, metal detectors, and backpack inspections to prevent the entry of weapons into school grounds. Following surges in violence involving firearms and knives in states such as Coahuila, Querétaro, and Michoacán, Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch announced plans to combat the issue through a presidential decree. This decree will require digital platforms to remove content inciting violence.
