Security measures along the Poland-Ukraine border
Overview
In early September 2026, Poland implemented a new restricted airspace zone, EP R134, in its eastern region to ensure national security and airspace safety due to the conflict in Ukraine. The restriction, effective from September 10 through December 9, 2026, covers airspace from ground level up to approximately 3 kilometers. While commercial passenger aircraft at higher altitudes remain unaffected, a near-total flight ban is in place during nighttime hours, with exceptions only for military aircraft and specific coordinated operations.
Concurrently, drone activity near the border has impacted regional stability. In Ukraine, a new special border regime was established in a one-kilometre-wide strip along the Russian and Belarusian borders, requiring permits for residency or work. On the Polish side, border authorities reported periodic suspensions of movement at crossings due to the threat of unmanned aerial vehicles. Reported incidents include a drone strike near the Dorohusk crossing that hit a gas station, causing an explosion and the evacuation of over 280 travelers and 50 officials, as well as a strike on a freight train locomotive near Hrebenne.
