Security violence in Niger and Nigeria

Violence against security forces and civilians has been reported in West Africa, specifically targeting police in Niger and Nigeria.

In the Dosso region of southwest Niger, unidentified gunmen on motorcycles attacked a gendarmerie station in Tissa, killing 15 officers. While no group has claimed responsibility, local officials suggested the attackers may have come from neighboring Nigeria. This incident aligns with a broader pattern of rising violence in the border regions of Niger, Benin, and Nigeria, involving groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.

In Nigeria, security challenges have expanded across multiple states. In Benue State, security forces faced targeted ambushes in the Ayilamo community, where two Mobile Police officers were killed while escorting a Divisional Police Officer. This followed a separate incident four days earlier in the same area, where a gun battle resulted in the deaths of four Mobile Police officers and seven civilians. Local residents identified the attackers as suspected armed herders operating from nearby forests.

In Plateau State, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu visited the region to address a surge in violent attacks and killings. Recent incidents include an attack near the Barkin Ladi-Bokkos border that killed three people, an assault on vigilantes in the NTV community, and an ambush of commuters at Dungus Junction. Disu pledged to intensify security operations and improve intelligence gathering, noting that arrests have been made in connection with recent incidents.
