Seismic activity in Germany
Overview
In August 2026, a magnitude 2.6 earthquake occurred in Bad Schwalbach, Hesse, at a depth of approximately 17 kilometers. Residents reported vibrations described as being “similar to someone shaking a house,” though police reported no injuries or significant material damage.
On September 10, 2026, at approximately 5:27 PM, a tremor with a magnitude between 3.3 and 3.5 struck the border region between Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg near Worms. The GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences and the State Earthquake Service of Baden-Württemberg classified the event as a “weak earthquake.” The epicenter was located near Bobenheim-Roxheim and Worms at a depth of approximately 8 to 10 kilometers.
Vibrations were felt in Mannheim, Ludwigshafen, the Bergstraße district, and Hesse. Residents in Worms reported houses shaking for several seconds, with some mistaking the movement for a vehicle collision. In Beindersheim, residents reported hearing loud sounds.
Rheinland-Palatinate Prime Minister Gordon Schnieder stated there were no personal injuries and advised citizens not to worry. While authorities received a “small to medium double-digit number of emergency calls,” no injuries or significant structural damage were confirmed by police or fire departments, though one tree in a district of Worms was reported to have fallen. Officials noted that minor aftershocks remain possible.
