Senegal blood supply shortage and donation drives

Senegal is facing critical blood supply shortages, with national requirements significantly exceeding current donation levels. In mid-August 2026, various initiatives were launched to address these deficits, including a drive by the Kiiraay group in Dakar that collected over 250 units at the National Blood Transfusion Center (CNTS). In Sedo Sebe, the Association of Students, Pupils, and Cadres of Sedo Sebe (AEECSS) organized a solidarity day combining blood donation with the distribution of mosquito nets to combat malaria.

By September 2026, efforts expanded through partnerships between Rotary clubs and the CNTS to combat rising deaths linked to shortages. Current data indicates Senegal records approximately 7.33 donations per 1,000 inhabitants, which is below the World Health Organization recommendation of 9 to 10 per 1,000. The country requires an additional 50,000 to 55,000 donations annually to treat conditions such as maternal and infant mortality, traffic accidents, oncology, dialysis, and complications from Rift Valley fever.
