Senegal political and environmental developments

Senegal is experiencing a period of political and environmental activity. Initially, the National Agency of Civil Aviation and Meteorology (ANACIM) issued warnings regarding heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts expected to impact multiple regions, including Matam, Kédougou, Fatick, Kaolack, Diourbel, and Thiès.

Politically, the country moved from preparations for a general policy statement by Prime Minister Al Aminou Lo toward intensified domestic maneuvering. Supporters of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, including special advisor Hannibal Djim, have conducted regional tours to engage religious leaders and strengthen the Kiraay movement. Djim has recently traveled through Walo, Fouta, and Fouladou, meeting with 27 religious leaders across 21 localities to bolster support for the President.

Concurrently, political opposition has increased. The Alliance pour la République (APR), representing former President Macky Sall, has formally criticized the current administration, calling on President Faye and National Assembly President Ousmane Sonko to address economic instability, specifically citing the rising cost of living, sector-wide layoffs, and the suspension of construction projects.

Newer tensions have emerged regarding electoral stability and political discourse. Journalist Pape Ngagne Ndiaye has cautioned that friction between the Pastef party and the Kiiraay movement could lead to violence during upcoming local elections. Meanwhile, members of the Maggi Kiiraay organization in Ndiaganiao have mobilized to defend President Faye, condemning statements by Arona Niome which they characterized as “lies and manipulations” intended to disparage the administration.
