Serbia energy and infrastructure development

Serbia is progressing with several large-scale energy and infrastructure initiatives, with a primary focus on the RHE Bistrica hydroelectric project. Early efforts involved coordinating with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to prepare technical and tender documentation, alongside the approval of urban projects and location conditions. Preparatory works for the plant are expected to begin in the coming months, with a main power plant tender anticipated next year.

Subsequent developments include investigative works at the Radoinja dam to prepare for the reversible hydroelectric plant, which is expected to reach a capacity of approximately 660 megawatts in turbine mode and 680 megawatts in pump mode. These preparations involve archaeological research and the relocation of roads, power lines, and water systems, with construction permits anticipated in early 2027.

Parallel to these energy projects, the government has implemented residential energy efficiency programs, such as subsidies in Kragujevac for household renovations and solar power installations. Additionally, local infrastructure upgrades are underway in Vršac to modernize water networks by replacing outdated piping to reduce leaks and improve pressure.
