Serbia-Russia diplomatic relations shift

Overview

Following parliamentary elections in Serbia, the diplomatic relationship between Belgrade and Moscow has faced significant tension. Initially, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova expressed expectations that the new Serbian government would maintain and develop existing political, economic, and cultural cooperation, asserting that Russia considers Serbia a “close and traditionally friendly nation.”

However, following the election results, Ana Brnabičová, Vice President of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), announced that the incoming administration would take the first step toward implementing sanctions against Russia. Brnabičová indicated that the new government would receive instructions from external sources with significant investments at stake, resulting in limited autonomy for the administration.
