Serbia school bomb threat evacuations
Overview
Dozens of primary and secondary schools across Serbia were evacuated following widespread bomb threats received via email. Police conducted anti-sabotage inspections in several cities, including Belgrade, Šabac, Subotica, Kraljevo, Čačak, and Niš. Preliminary findings indicate the threats were false alarms. In Bor, all primary schools were evacuated, but police inspections confirmed no explosives were present.
Public broadcaster RTS reported that over 100 schools in Serbia received these threats. This wave of incidents is part of a broader series of coordinated hoaxes targeting schools across multiple countries, including Hungary, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
In Northern Ireland, up to 300 schools reported receiving identical messages. Education Minister Paul Givan noted that the threats appeared to be from Islamists, claiming that ‘Sharia law would be imposed’ and that explosive devices were inside the buildings. The messages reportedly included the phrase ‘Allahu Akbar’. Police Scotland is also investigating similar threatening messages in Scotland, which are being treated as a hoax.
In Hungary, more than 70 schools were targeted by emails claiming explosives had been placed on the premises. Hungarian Interior Minister Gabor Posfai stated that investigations found the threats to be unfounded. Authorities across all affected regions have indicated that the threats do not appear to be credible or viable, despite causing significant disruption to educational activities.
