Serbian infrastructure and regional development initiatives

Entities: Kosovo · Serbia · Ibar River · Kosovo and Metohija · Belgrade Waterfront

Overview

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has conducted several visits to regional municipalities to discuss and announce various infrastructure and development projects.

In the Užice region, Vucic announced an approximately €1 billion investment plan aimed at improving Western Serbia. This includes accelerating the construction of the highway from Užice to the border with Republika Srpska and beginning work on the 6.2-km Kadinjača tunnel. The plan also includes a €100 million health center.

In the Stara Pazova municipality, Vucic met with local officials and clergy to discuss the renovation of religious, educational, and cultural facilities. Discussions focused on local infrastructure improvements, such as water pipe replacement, street sanitation, pedestrian and bicycle paths, and the construction of a new cultural center. During a visit to Belegiš, Vucic highlighted regional economic growth and noted that the local budget has increased significantly since 2012.

More recently, President Vucic inspected the reconstruction of the Old Railway Bridge in Belgrade as part of the 'Belgrade Waterfront' project. The bridge is being converted into a three-level pedestrian structure featuring cafes and a lookout point called 'Belgrade Eye,' with an expected completion date in April 2027 to coincide with Expo 2027. Vucic expressed dissatisfaction regarding the current pace of this project.

In response to regional tensions, Vucic addressed the situation in Kosovo and Metohija. The Serbian government is investigating the possibility of diverting the course of the Ibar River in response to actions by Pristina near Gazivode Lake and the treatment of Serbs in the region. Experts and engineers have been commissioned to study the hydrological and infrastructural implications of this potential move.
