Serbian National Theatre ballet mobbing dispute
Overview
Eleven performers from the Serbian National Theatre (SNP) filed a lawsuit in Novi Sad against the institution, alleging mobbing by ballet artistic director Aja Jung. The plaintiffs claim the harassment has lasted nearly two years and includes discriminatory role assignments, the dismissal of experienced Serbian performers in favor of foreign dancers, and the initiation of unfounded disciplinary proceedings. The dancers also alleged that Jung unfairly retired 12 performers and that mandatory daily exercises for dancers over the age of 40 infringe upon their dignity and health.
Following the legal action, the ballet ensemble and soloists criticized Jung for refusing to participate in a televised public dialogue regarding the allegations. The dancers further accused the SNP Management Board of making untruthful denials to cover up working conditions. They also cited a ruling from the First Basic Court in Belgrade, which they claim proved Jung lacks the necessary qualifications and competencies to lead the professional ensemble according to institutional regulations.
