Serbian parliamentary election unrest in Belgrade

Overview

Following the parliamentary elections, tensions rose in Belgrade as citizens gathered to celebrate the victory of a student list. During these post-election activities, protesters began removing tents and fences from Pionirski Park after Aleksandar Vučić acknowledged electoral defeat.

Amidst the celebrations, Ana Brnabić, the President of the National Assembly and acting President of Serbia, engaged in several heated verbal confrontations with citizens. Brnabić reportedly stopped her vehicle to address individuals who insulted her, telling them, ‘Do not insult and do not threaten people!’ Witnesses reported her engaging in intense arguments in the street, where she allegedly shouted, ‘Run them over, run them over!’ during rising tensions.

Video footage of a confrontation between Brnabić and a group of young men shows her using profanity and asking, ‘Am I a [slur]?’ and ‘Do you want to ride me? Do you want to beat me?’. One man responded that insults were directed at all government representatives and that everyone would answer to the court. During the escalation, Brnabić reportedly stood in the middle of the road amidst traffic, shouting, ‘Run over me! Run over me!’. Witnesses noted she refused to shake hands with citizens attempting to de-escalate the situation.

In a separate interaction during live election coverage, protesters offered a chair to RTL reporter Ana Mlinarić to allow her to rest during her broadcast.

Newer reports confirm the intensity of the altercation, noting that Brnabić approached a group of young men to demand explanations for alleged insults. During the encounter, she was recorded using profanity and reportedly grabbed a man by the upper arm. As citizens sang, Brnabić stood in the road, shouting at passing vehicles to ‘run her over’ or ‘drive over her’. Witnesses also observed her pushing away a woman’s hand who attempted to calm the situation.
