Serbian political violence anniversary protests

Overview

Citizens and students in Serbia have organized commemorative protests to mark the anniversary of political violence that occurred in August 2025.

In Novi Sad, assemblies scheduled a commemoration of the August 13, 2025, clashes in front of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) offices. During those original incidents, ruling party supporters reportedly fired pyrotechnics at demonstrators while being protected by police and the gendarmerie, resulting in several injuries. These events led to subsequent arrests and a blockade of the judicial building in Novi Sad.

In Bačka Palanka, demonstrators held a march to protest the lack of institutional response and the failure to prosecute those responsible for violence on August 11 and 12, 2025. During the previous year, SNS supporters reportedly attacked citizens with eggs, water, pyrotechnics, and bottles. The Bačka Palanka commemoration included 17 minutes of silence: 16 minutes for victims of the Novi Sad canopy collapse and one minute for a boy who died following contact with an electric cable in Bačka Palanka.
