Serbian push to memorialize Operation Storm
Entities: Operation Storm · Savo Štrbac · Republic of Serbian Krajina · Jasenovac · Adrijana Mesarović
Overview
In early August 2026 Serbian political leaders intensified efforts to keep the memory of the 1995 Operation Storm and related wartime atrocities alive. Vladimir Gaic, president of Serbia’s People’s Party, called for continuous public remembrance, urging schools to teach the events and announcing a series of commemorations, exhibitions and film screenings across Banjska, Banja Luka and other sites.
Later the same day, Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Adrijana Mesarović appealed on social media for the protection of historical truth, warning that revisionism harms victims’ dignity. Former SAO Krajina leader Milan Babić also urged confronting the past. A monument to children killed in the war was vandalised in Slavonski Brod, prompting calls for its restoration and underscoring the ongoing struggle over historical memory in Serbia‑Croatia relations.
