Sergipe drought and water supply issues
Overview
The Alto Sertão region of Sergipe, including municipalities such as Canindé de São Francisco and Poço Redondo, has faced severe drought linked to El Niño. Rainfall levels dropped to 77% of the climatological average, a 57% decrease from the previous year. This shortage has threatened corn, bean, and cassava crops, reduced pastures, and increased forest fire risks. Additionally, a dam in São Cristóvão reached an alert state due to low water volumes, prompting the Civil Defense to deploy 40 water trucks.
By early November, water supply conditions began to shift following modernization works on the Adutora do Semiárido by Iguá Sergipe. While water supply began returning gradually to municipalities like Nossa Senhora da Glória, Carira, and São Miguel do Aleixo, some remote or elevated areas required up to 72 hours for full restoration. Water trucks continued to support residents during this transition period.
