Severe weather and flooding in Latin America

Overview

Heavy rainfall and severe weather have caused widespread damage and infrastructure disruptions across several Latin American regions.

In late July, intense rains in Campeche, Mexico, resulted in over 180 mm of precipitation and wind gusts of 60 km/h, toppling at least 50 trees and causing power outages in more than 20 neighborhoods. Simultaneously, in Cumaná, Venezuela, overflowing channels led to flooding in the Boca de Sabana, Campeche, and Valle Verde areas, necessitating sediment removal and damage assessments.

By mid-August, severe weather continued to impact Central and South America. In Guatemala, strong winds and rain caused fallen trees, downed utility poles, and fires in Guatemala City, while damaging roofs in Retalhuleu. In Panama, the Chiriquí province faced landslides that blocked main roads and flooding due to saturated drainage systems, prompting monitoring and debris clearance efforts by national civil protection and public works authorities.
