Severe weather and infrastructure disruptions in Japan

Overview

Severe weather and heavy rainfall across Japan have caused significant infrastructure disruptions and safety hazards. Initially, highway closures were reported on the Hokuriku Expressway following a multi-vehicle accident and on the Tohoku Expressway due to heavy rain.

As the weather conditions persisted, the impact expanded to include landslides and flooding. In Shizuoka Prefecture, landslides near Mount Fuji buried vehicles and led to the closure of the Fuji Subaru Line. While authorities noted no direct link between specific landslides and two climbers found in cardiopulmonary arrest, the extreme weather prompted numerous distress calls. One fatality was reported in a separate landslide in Kawanehon Town.

Regional flooding and intense rainfall also affected Aichi and Gifu Prefectures, resulting in 41 injuries. In Nagoya, record-breaking rainfall of 104.5 mm in a single hour caused major transportation delays.
