Overview

Authorities in Oyo State, Nigeria, are addressing various forms of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), including rape, defilement, and domestic violence.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) reported 96 cases of SGBV between January and August 2026. While 57 cases were closed and seven are undergoing prosecution, 32 cases remain inconclusive because complainants failed to follow up or provide witnesses for court proceedings.

In response to these challenges, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga, pledged that the police command will not compromise on cases involving sexual abuse or rape. He noted that while the command has successfully rescued victims of trafficking, prosecution remains difficult when perpetrators are relatives of the survivors, making it hard to obtain evidence from family members.
