Sexual assault investigation at University of Chicago

Overview

Chicago police and the University of Chicago are investigating a sexual assault that occurred during a party at the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house in Hyde Park. The incident, reported around 1:50 a.m. on Sunday, October 12, 2026, involved a 21-year-old woman who was not a student at the university. Following the attack, the victim was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital for medical treatment. Witnesses provided harrowing accounts of the incident, reporting that a group of men allegedly cheered and encouraged the assault outside a locked bathroom. Witnesses reported hearing men shout comments such as “When’s it my turn?” and “Let me in.” One witness described finding the victim partially undressed and not fully conscious, while a man who was also not a university student allegedly had hold of her wrists. An individual intervened during the assault, causing the suspect to flee. Security footage reportedly shows a suspect described as a 5-foot-7-inch South Asian male with a dark complexion and curly hair, wearing a black T-shirt, black jogging pants, and white shoes. The University of Chicago has identified a “person of interest” through witness statements, video evidence, and license plate readers. This individual, who is not affiliated with the university, has been banned from campus. While no formal charges have been filed by the Chicago Police Department as of Wednesday, reports have identified the suspect as Raihaan Khaja, a first-year student at Purdue University who was visiting the area. Alpha Epsilon Pi stated that no members affiliated with the chapter were involved or complicit, and the fraternity has been instructed to suspend all events pending the investigation results. New details from a witness, Mia Lara, indicate that she discovered a friend in distress in a closed bathroom during the October 10 party.
