Sexual violence allegations against Indonesian climbing head

Overview

Indonesian National Police (Bareskrim Polri) named Hendra Basir (HB) a suspect in a sexual violence case involving five female rock climbing athletes. Basir, who served as a coach from 2022 to 2024 and as Head Coach for the Indonesian Rock Climbing Federation (FPTI) National Training Center in 2025, allegedly exploited power imbalances to commit physical sexual harassment. The incidents reportedly occurred repeatedly between 2022 and December 2025, both in Indonesia and during international competitions abroad.

Following the investigation, which included testimony from 18 witnesses and consultations with various experts, the case file was declared complete (P-21). The suspect and all collected evidence have been transferred to the Bekasi District Attorney’s Office.

Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir, expressed full support for the prosecution, stating the government is committed to ensuring justice and protection for the victims. Thohir called for the case to serve as a momentum to strengthen athlete protection systems, emphasizing that sports must be a safe environment free from power abuse and violence.
