SFL Missions GHGSat satellite development and deployment
Overview
SFL Missions is expanding its satellite development and deployment capabilities for GHGSat to monitor greenhouse gas emissions.
In late September 2026, SFL Missions was awarded a contract to develop the GHGSat-D2 demonstration satellite. This mission utilizes the expanded DEFIANT-XL bus to accommodate a high-accuracy sensor from ABB Canada, aiming to provide more precise measurements of methane emissions from smaller ground sources. The satellite is expected to weigh nearly 100 kg.
Separately, on October 1, 2026, SFL Missions successfully deployed two microsatellites, GHGSat-C18 (Eleanor) and GHGSat-C19 (Aidan), via a SpaceX Transporter 18 mission. These 15-kg satellites, built on the NEMO platform, join a constellation of 13 spacecraft designed to provide emissions data to sectors such as mining, agriculture, and oil and gas to support decarbonization.
