Shadow of the Road video game development

Overview

The tactical RPG Shadow of the Road, developed by Another Angle Games and published by Owlcat Games, has released new promotional material detailing its setting and narrative.

Initial trailers established the game as a turn-based tactical RPG set in an alternate 19th-century Japan during the Bakumatsu period. The setting features a clash between the shogunate and imperial forces, incorporating steam-powered technology, traditional architecture, and supernatural elements like kami and yōkai. Players take on the role of a Tokugawa clan strategist.

Subsequent story overview trailers, debuted at the Telltale Games Choices Matter Festival, provided further narrative depth. The plot follows disciples Satoru and Akira, who are forced into exile as ronin following the death of a loyal vassal, Master Mochitsugu. The world-building includes science fiction elements, such as advanced mechs provided by the East Nippon Company to the Emperor’s forces. While a playable demo was previously available on Steam, the game is now scheduled to launch later this year.
