Sikandar Siddique residency dispute in Copenhagen

Sikandar Siddique, leader of the Frie Grønne party, faces removal from the Copenhagen City Council following a dispute over his residency status. The controversy centers on whether Siddique’s move from Herlev to a small room in Nørrebro was a legitimate relocation or a pro forma address used to qualify for the municipal election.

After the Copenhagen Municipality annulled the move and the Ministry of Digital Government ruled against him in a residency case, a majority in the City Council—including Enhedslisten, Konservative, Venstre, and Socialdemokratiet—has moved to remove him from his seat. While Socialdemokratiet does not intend to seek repayment of his salary, Venstre has suggested investigating whether the municipality should reclaim his compensation.

Siddique has contested the ruling, claiming the pressure is a reaction to his political views and his party’s willingness to “challenge the system and criticize Zionist influence.” If the council formally determines he has lost his eligibility, Asham Agha Nadeem is expected to be approved as his successor.
