Slovakia-Austria cross-border transport developments

Overview

Regional public transport connections between Slovakia and Austria are seeing new developments in cross-border services. A pilot bus line, number 902, was introduced in late September 2026 to connect Bratislava with several Austrian border towns, including Berg, Kittsee, Edelstal, and Prellenkirchen. This three-month trial period offers free service on weekdays and Saturdays to gather data on whether the route should become permanent.

Simultaneously, efforts to modernize existing routes are underway. Blaguss Slovakia has transitioned the Bratislava-Vienna route and its connection to Vienna International Airport toward electric power. As of October 1, 2026, eight new Yutong T12E electric buses are being deployed to cover approximately 91% of the 66 daily connections, utilizing fast-charging solutions to manage the high daily mileage required for the service.

In a joint effort, FlixBus and the Blaguss Group have transitioned this high-frequency international route to largely electric propulsion. The electric fleet, consisting of Yutong buses with 466 kWh battery packs, covers approximately 5,568 kilometers of the 6,086 total daily kilometers. To support this operation, charging infrastructure has been established in both Vienna and Bratislava, utilizing photovoltaic systems combined with battery storage. This transition aims to demonstrate the reliability of electric long-distance transport on international short-haul routes connecting major hubs such as Vienna Main Station, Vienna-Erdberg, and the international airports in both Vienna-Schwechat and Bratislava.
