Slovakia QR payment surge expands

Overview

After a mandatory QR‑code payment system was introduced on 1 May 2026, Slovak merchants quickly adopted the service. In the first month more than €2 million flowed through 61,000 transactions, and by mid‑June active digital cards rose 34 % year‑on‑year. Banks responded with steep fee hikes on paper‑based services while lowering fees for digital channels, prompting a shift toward the state‑run QR solution and the free VRP2 app.

July saw record daily volumes – 3,522 payments (€204 000) on 3 July – and a cumulative June total of almost €3.5 million across 83,000 transactions. By late July the Slovak Financial Administration reported over 224,500 QR transactions in under three months, totalling more than €9 million (average €40.60 per payment). The agency estimates that merchants can save a few hundred euros per year in small shops and €8 000‑€16 000 annually for larger retailers or hotels, depending on turnover and fee structures. These savings reinforce the continued growth of QR payments among small traders, market vendors, and service providers.

The QR ecosystem remains fee‑free for payment notifications through 2027, further encouraging electronic payment adoption across the country.
