Slovenia EV subsidy depletion and market impact

Overview

Slovenia’s electric vehicle (EV) subsidy program has faced rapid depletion due to high consumer demand. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy announced that the public call, launched on 12 May, would close shortly as allocated climate-fund resources were fully spent. The program reached its limits, with 3,105 individual applications requesting €19.58 million and 1,125 business applications requesting €6.39 million, hitting the respective €25.6 million and €8 million caps.

Despite the exhaustion of funds, Slovenia saw a record surge in EV sales in July, with approximately 1,520 battery electric vehicle registrations—nearly triple the amount from the previous year. EVs accounted for nearly a quarter of all new vehicle sales in July, up from a market share of less than ten percent the year prior.

The depletion of the SUB-EV26 funds, partly due to the conclusion of the European Recovery and Resilience Plan funding, has created market uncertainty. Dr. Slavko Ažman of Porsche Slovenija warned that the market remains fragile and that the lack of state support could lead to order cancellations. Future support is expected to depend on a new climate fund spending program, which the government is anticipated to address in the autumn.
