Slovenia wildfires and aerial firefighting
Overview
On 5 August 2026, a wildfire ignited by lightning on steep terrain above Srednji Vrh in Kranjska Gora prompted an immediate aerial response using three air-tractor aircraft and a Slovenian Armed Forces helicopter.
The following day, 6 August, a series of fires erupted across the Primorska region. Near Nova Gorica, blazes at Bate and above the Kromberk estate required aerial support, while a fire at an industrial hall in Izola caused damage estimated at several hundred thousand euros. In the Žalec municipality, police investigated a cluster of small forest fires suspected to be deliberately set, noting that arson carries potential penalties of up to five years imprisonment.
By 10 August, firefighting efforts continued on the inaccessible slopes above Srednji Vrh in the Karavanke mountains. Although the fire, covering approximately one hectare, was described as smoldering in hotspots rather than spreading rapidly, drone surveillance confirmed that forest areas were reigniting. Response teams from several volunteer fire departments, including Bohinjska Bistrica and Gozd Martuljek, have been working alongside aerial assets. Authorities also issued safety warnings regarding water scooping activities at Lake Bohinj during these operations.
