Slovenian transport and cycling infrastructure development

Overview

Slovenian municipalities are investing in transport and cycling infrastructure to improve connectivity and tourism. In July 2026, a new 20-km cycling corridor linking the Alpine lakes of Bled and Bohinj was inaugurated. The €25 million project, funded by the Republic of Slovenia, the European Regional Development Fund, and local municipalities, provides a route largely separate from motor traffic. While most of the trail is open, a section near Bohinj Bela and Obrne remains closed for landslide repairs until late August 2026.

Further infrastructure developments are underway in other regions. The municipality of Bovec is allocating over three million euros for road maintenance and the expansion of a cycling network intended to connect Bovec with Novo Gorica. Meanwhile, in Bohinj, officials have shifted plans for the Savica river bridge in Ukanc, determining that the deteriorating structure requires a complete replacement rather than a renovation. This project is currently awaiting documentation and is expected to be implemented next year.
