Smuggling activities on the Laos-Vietnam border

Overview

Authorities in Vietnam have intercepted multiple shipments of contraband being smuggled across the border from Laos.

In early August 2026, the Quang Tri Provincial Border Guard seized 633 kg of illegal fireworks and 35 synthetic drug tablets from a Lao-registered truck at the Cha Lo international border crossing. Two Lao nationals were arrested in connection with the seizure.

In July 2026, Hue City police dismantled a transnational smuggling ring involving the illegal transport of nearly 9,300 electric detonators from Laos into Vietnam. The operation began after police intercepted a bus on July 9 carrying approximately 200 kg of detonators. Following an expanded investigation, authorities seized the remaining explosives by July 17 and detained two suspects from Quang Ngai Province and Da Nang City, identified as D. V. T. and V. Q. K. The investigation into the ring, which utilized long-haul buses to move materials for sale, is ongoing as police attempt to identify other members of the network. Deputy Minister of Public Security Pham The Tung commended the Hue police for their success in combating organized transnational crime.

On August 19, 2026, reports confirmed that the investigation into the detonator smuggling ring remains active as Hue police continue efforts to identify additional members of the network.
