Investigation into Fernando Haddad police incident concludes

Overview

Fernando Haddad, a candidate for the governorship of São Paulo, reported an irregular encounter involving the Military Police. Haddad’s driver alleged that a police vehicle followed them for approximately 40 minutes and five kilometers, involving intimidating behavior and officers armed with rifles who used dismissive language, specifically telling the driver to “vaza daqui” (get out of here).

Governor Tarcísio de Freitas ordered an inquiry to investigate the incident. The São Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP) conducted a preliminary investigation by reviewing approximately 70 camera recordings, stating that the footage showed a police vehicle passing the location slowly without stopping or deploying officers, finding no evidence of a pursuit.

The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) also requested justifications regarding patrol authorizations and the identification of the specific officers and vehicle involved to determine if there was any abuse of authority or political targeting.

Following further investigation, the Military Police of São Paulo denied that a pursuit occurred. Using officer testimonies and WhatsApp logs, the investigation concluded that the meeting of two police vehicles near the driver's car was a planned rendezvous to respond to a potential robbery or theft at a nearby condominium. Logs indicated that one vehicle parked near the driver's car at 10:25 PM, while the candidate's vehicle had already departed the area at 10:26 PM. The police clarified that a brief flashlight exposure of Haddad’s vehicle at 9:45 PM was a separate incident. Consequently, the Electoral Public Ministry (MPE) has archived the procedure, citing a lack of evidence of electoral misconduct.
