Sofía Herrera disappearance investigation
Overview
The investigation into the disappearance of three-year-old Sofía Herrera from the John Goodall campsite in Río Grande, Tierra del Fuego, has encountered a setback. The Interpol red notice for the case’s sole suspect, Chilean national José Dagoberto Díaz Águila, has expired after the judiciary failed to renew the warrant.
Díaz Águila, who transitioned from a witness to a primary suspect in 2020, is no longer subject to the international arrest warrant that had been active for several years. The responsibility for the renewal rested with the presiding judge in Río Grande.
On the 18th anniversary of the 2008 disappearance, the family has intensified their advocacy. They have accused Judge María Rosa Santana of judicial neglect and abandonment of the case following the expiration of the alert. While the expiration does not clear the suspect of involvement, it removes the active international search mandate.
In response, Sofía’s mother, María Elena Delgado, has requested that authorities officially incorporate an updated facial projection of her daughter, created with the assistance of a U.S.-based NGO. The family continues to demand the use of modern technology and updated search protocols to find answers regarding Sofía’s whereabouts.
