Sofia Central Railway Station operational disruptions
Overview
Sofia Central Railway Station is facing significant service disruptions due to both planned infrastructure projects and unexpected technical failures.
Scheduled reconstruction work on the railway junction is set to suspend movement on tracks 1 through 11 from November 2, 2026, until March 18, 2027. While certain lines such as Sofia–Plovdiv and Sofia–Mezdra will utilize specific tracks, many other services will require passenger transfers to Poduyane Passenger and Iskar stations. Some routes to Burgas, Varna, and Kapikule are expected to remain unaffected by the reconstruction.
In addition to these planned works, an unplanned electrical equipment failure caused a six-hour suspension of train movement in late October. The incident, involving a damaged pantograph during locomotive shunting, left the contact network without voltage and forced the cancellation of several commuter trains between Sofia and Pernik, as well as Sofia and Kostenets. Diesel locomotives were deployed to mitigate the impact, though significant delays were reported.
