Solar energy and battery storage integration
Overview
Solar energy developments are increasingly focusing on the integration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) to create hybrid facilities. In Spain, research from Fundación Inade has identified that 75% of fires in photovoltaic installations are caused by product or installation failures, with 39% attributed to installation errors and 36% to product defects. Consequently, experts suggest that fire prevention and protection engineering must be integrated into the initial design phases of solar and battery storage systems.
Simultaneously, several large-scale projects are expanding storage capabilities. In Mérida, Spain, six solar plants are transitioning to hybrid facilities through a 26.7 million euro investment, aiming to add 51.12 MW of power and 200.6 MWh of storage capacity. Other regional developments include Ieron Solar SLU’s 7 million euro expansion in Montánchez, Spain, and Greendat Capital’s planned San Joaquín plant in Galeana, Mexico, which is expected to feature a 125.99 MWdc peak power capacity alongside a 30 MW/90 MWh battery storage system.
