Sonora state student support initiatives

Overview

The government of Sonora has implemented several initiatives to support university students within the state. In Moctezuma, the government launched an online housing directory for students attending the Universidad de la Sierra (Unisierra) to assist in finding safe and affordable accommodation.

Through the ‘Becas Sonora de Oportunidades’ program, the state has significantly expanded its financial aid. Recent efforts in the Cajeme and Navojoa municipalities saw the distribution of more than 14,000 scholarships to public university students, involving an investment exceeding 70 million pesos to support student retention.

Over the four-year administration of Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño, the state has invested more than 3.66 billion pesos in educational incentives, totaling 607,181 scholarships for children and youth. For the first half of 2026, the Institute of Scholarships and Educational Credit of the State of Sonora (Ibcees) reported delivering 44,500 scholarships with an investment of 255 million pesos.

Looking toward the 2026-2 semester, Governor Durazo and President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo plan to coordinate a “historic investment” for the ‘Becas Sonora de Oportunidades’ program. The objective is to expand coverage so that all students enrolled in the public university system can access economic support for essential costs such as transportation, food, and school materials.
