South American natural gas infrastructure developments

Overview

Energy infrastructure projects are being proposed in South America to address gas supply and distribution needs.

In Brazil, Transportadora Brasileira Gasoduto Bolívia-Brasil S. A. (TBG) has requested authorization for a $286 million expansion of the Bolivia–Brazil Gas Pipeline (Gasbol). The Free Allocation Project seeks to resolve a bottleneck by relocating compression stations and duplicating a pipeline segment, which would nearly double receiving capacity at the Garuva entry point. This move responds to declining Bolivian gas exports and aims to facilitate the distribution of domestic pre-salt gas and imported liquefied natural gas (LNG).

In Argentina, Transportadora de Gas del Norte S.A. (TGN) announced a $2.2 billion investment to construct the Manuel Belgrano Gas Pipeline. The project involves 753 kilometers of new infrastructure connecting the Neuquén Basin to Córdoba to transport gas from the Vaca Muerta formation. The initiative aims to address supply deficits in central, northern, and coastal Argentina while developing export markets. The project includes compressor plant upgrades and is expected to begin operations by April 2029.
