South American road safety and infrastructure management

Overview

Regional authorities in Argentina, Chile, and Colombia have implemented various measures and responded to incidents related to road safety and infrastructure preservation.

In Argentina, the Entre Ríos government introduced regulations under Law 10.975 to control vehicle weight and prevent asphalt deterioration, utilizing inspections by the Provincial Highway Directorate and local police. Similarly, in Chile, the Ministry of Transport restricted heavy vehicles over 3,500 kilograms on International Route 15-CH to protect rural roads and prevent the bypassing of customs and police controls.

Emergency responses were also noted on South American routes. In Chile, a rescue operation near San Pedro de Atacama evacuated 59 people after a truck lost control on an icy road. In Colombia, authorities are investigating a bus accident on the Pan-American highway in Cauca that resulted in five deaths and 64 injuries, with inquiries into whether an armed attack preceded the crash.
