South Korea fatal accidents

Overview

In late July 2026, a series of unrelated fatal incidents occurred across South Korea. On 24 July, a 60‑year‑old hospital cafeteria worker in Gimhae fell into an elevator shaft after the elevator door opened while she was pushing a handcart, prompting a police investigation into possible elevator malfunction. The same day, a 50‑year‑old man who had gone out to collect shellfish off the coast of Changwon was found by the Coast Guard in cardiac arrest and later died in hospital, leading authorities to examine the circumstances of his death.

A week later, on 30 July, two cargo‑truck collisions were reported. In Namwon, Jeonbuk Province, two trucks collided, injuring both drivers; police found no evidence of alcohol or drug use and suspected driver error. Earlier that day, a separate crash on a farm road in Dalseong‑gun, Daegu, involved a moving 1‑ton truck striking a stationary one of the same type; the driver of the moving truck suffered cardiac arrest and died, while the other driver was unharmed. Investigators are reviewing black‑box data and witness statements to determine the cause of the collisions.
