South Korea Hangeul Day centenary celebrations
Overview
South Korea is conducting various celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Hangeul Day and the 580th anniversary of the promulgation of Hunminjeongeum. To commemorate the centenary, the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation, in collaboration with the National Hangeul Museum, released limited edition gold and silver commemorative medals. These medals feature designs based on historical materials, including King Sejong the Great and the ‘Hunminjeongeum Eonhaebon’. The medals are also part of a special exhibition at the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History. Further festivities include ‘2026 Hangeul Week’, held from October 6 to 17. Organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism under the theme ‘Hangeul by My Side’, events are scheduled at Gwanghwamun Square and other locations nationwide. The ‘Hangeul Hanmadang-Gwanghwamun’ festival, running from October 6 to 8, features musicals, concerts, and interactive exhibitions. A lighting ceremony and media facade titled ‘Twenty-Four, Universe’ is scheduled for October 8, projecting the 24 letters of the Korean alphabet onto the walls of Gwanghwamun through October 11. Additional commemorative activities include a three-part video series by the National Archives of Korea titled ‘Unboxing the Archive: Hangeul Edition’, which explores the script’s scientific excellence and its history of preservation. In Seoul, approximately 400 participants, including many foreigners, gathered at Gwanghwamun Square for the 17th Calligraphy Competition organized by the Korean Arts and Culture Institute. In Gyeongju, the ‘2026 Gyeongju Family Love Hangeul Love Camp’ was held from October 9 to 10 for 100 students. The camp included a lecture by Professor Shin Byeong-ju on King Sejong the Great and hands-on activities such as a ‘Hangeul Golden Bell’ quiz.
