KBO League to resume play after heatwave cancellations

Overview

A record-breaking heatwave in South Korea has significantly disrupted the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) schedule. In early May, the league cancelled multiple KBO League and Futures League games following medical emergencies, including an incident where 25 people required medical attention during a match between the SSG Landers and LG Twins.

In response to the extreme temperatures and the implementation of an “extreme heat warning” protocol, the KBO shifted game start times to later in the evening and introduced cooling breaks. The heatwave continued into August, prompting further game cancellations after a spectator fainted due to heat-related complications during a game at SSG Landers Field.

By August 1, the extreme temperatures led to the cancellation of nearly all games for a week, forcing an unexpected summer break. Following the cancellation of 30 games in total—the first time the league has been halted for weather since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021—the KBO is set to resume play on August 11 across five stadiums.

To mitigate ongoing heat risks, the KBO has announced that all remaining games will start at 7:00 p.m. until further notice. While weekday games typically begin at 6:30 p.m., the league may revert to earlier times if temperatures drop. The resumption occurs at a critical juncture for season standings, as teams like the KT Wiz, Kia Tigers, and NC Dinos face the challenge of regaining competitive form after the break, while the upcoming schedule may also be impacted by player call-ups for international competitions.
