South Korean hydrogen electrolysis technology development

Overview

South Korean industrial entities are advancing technological developments for hydrogen production through various electrolysis methods.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) initiated a project to build an industrial ecosystem for high-temperature electrolysis. This effort focuses on utilizing nuclear process heat to improve the efficiency of clean hydrogen production and involves developing Korean-style Solid Oxide Cells (K-SOC) through a collaborative platform of industry, academia, and research institutes.

Concurrently, Hyundai Engineering & Construction has begun developing design technologies for large-scale water electrolysis plants with capacities of 100MW or more. As part of a national project, a consortium led by Hyundai is working to create basic design packages and economic feasibility assessments. This initiative aims to integrate artificial intelligence and dynamic process simulation to manage the output fluctuations of renewable energy sources like wind and solar power.
