South Korean intellectual property commercialization efforts
Overview
The Korean Intellectual Property Office has initiated several programs to facilitate the transfer and commercialization of technology. In late August 2026, the office launched the ‘2026 Intellectual Property Trading Network (IP-LINK)’ in Suwon, focusing specifically on connecting patent technologies in the semiconductor and secondary battery sectors with industry demand.
By mid-September 2026, the scope of these efforts expanded through an inter-ministerial roadshow involving 11 government ministries. This larger initiative aimed to connect 2,132 selected public technologies generated via government R&D with industrial demand. The program included technical consultations and the recognition of institutions as ‘Excellent Intellectual Property Management Institutions’ to incentivize effective technology commercialization.
