South Korean medical research awards

Overview

Several South Korean medical professors have been honored with the 36th Science and Technology Outstanding Paper Award, organized by the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies. The awards recognize exceptional research published in domestic academic journals.

Recipients from Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center include Professor Lee Jae-ho, who studied the impact of expanding medical school quotas on anatomy training; Professor Kim Hae-won, who researched neurodevelopmental outcomes in low birth weight infants using glucose metabolism imaging; and Professor Kim Jin-kyung, who investigated antibiotic resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Additionally, Professor Kim Hyun-jung of Inje University Sanggye Paik Hospital was recognized for research analyzing cervical malignant tumors and the diagnostic value of cytology in cases independent of the Human Papillomavirus.

A research team from Korea University Guro Hospital, led by Professor Choi Eui-kyung and Research Professor Kang Min-woong, also received the award. Their nationwide study, which analyzed data from approximately 4.54 million infants, documented a significant decline in exclusive breastfeeding rates in South Korea between 2007 and 2021. The study identified that factors such as low birth weight, premature birth, rural residency, and lower income levels significantly influence these declining trends.
