South Korean regional master craftsman programs

Overview

South Korean metropolitan cities are implementing programs to recognize and incentivize highly skilled technicians through ‘Master Craftsman’ designations.

In Jeonnam Gwangju Integrated Special City, an initiative was announced to recruit up to 10 individuals across 38 fields. Candidates must possess at least 15 years of experience and meet specific residency or employment requirements. The selection process includes document reviews, on-site inspections, and public opinion collection. Selected masters receive an official title, a certificate, and an annual technical incentive grant of 2 million won for five years.

Similarly, Daejeon Metropolitan City has concluded its selection process for the 2026 ‘Daejeon Metropolitan City Masters’, honoring three technicians in the fields of food processing, ceramic arts, and baking and confectionery. These honorees receive certificates, plaques, and an annual incentive of 3 million won for five years. Since 2019, Daejeon has selected a total of 21 masters through a three-month evaluation process.
